Nyssa is a resident of Raven’s keep, working as a servant to a prestigious family. She was rejected by her family as a child for displaying magical abilities. Like most inhabitants of Raven’s Keep, she is immortal, but unlike most, she has no recollections of her previous life before beginning as a child again. She spends her days as a handmaiden to the daughter of the family, and her nights in secret meetings with the town’s sorcerer, Kaiun, where she hones her magical powers.
When the call for the expedition sounded, Nyssa was hesitant to join. Even after living her present incarnation for thirty years, she had found no clues in or around Raven’s Keep to indicate who she used to be, or why she had no memories. She wasn’t ready to leave without answers. However, her mentor Kaiun encouraged her to go out into the Wildlands, saying it may do her good to discover other sides of herself. With resolve, she packed her bag and signed up for the adventure.
“Didn’t you see? Didn’t you see what she did? What she is?”
Nyssa lay in her bed, small fists clenched as she tried not to cry. She didn’t mean to make magical things happen. She didn’t ask for it! This was the first time she’d ever done magic in front of her mother. And now her mother was afraid of her! That flighty, naïve, close-minded mother of hers. She couldn’t depend on her father for help; he’d never liked her, the daughter who he wished was a son.
Nyssa heard a rustling sound from the hall, and her mother burst into Nyssa’s room. “Get up, get up!” she screeched at her daughter, who jumped out of bed, frightened of her mother’s anger. Her mother rushed around the room, throwing Nyssa’s clothes and keepsakes haphazardly into a traveling trunk. Tears streamed down Nyssa’s face as her entire life was removed from her room. Her father appeared in the doorway, staring impassively at his wife while she packed, steadfastly ignoring the daughter he never wanted, whom he thought would bring shame upon their traditional, magic-fearing family. Before Nyssa knew it, she was loaded into a cart with her belongings and whisked away from her chosen childhood home.

With a start, Nyssa woke from her narrow pallet. The memory of leaving home as a child didn’t seem to fade with time; on the contrary, every time she dreamt of it, the details seemed even clearer. She rubbed her eyes and sat up, slowly adjusting to the dawn light. She often wondered who she used to be before she began anew, washing her previous memories clean. No one in this town actually had children anymore; some chose to be children again while carrying their previous selves’ memories. Others, like Nyssa, began as children without knowledge of who they used to be. She always wondered why.
A loud, heavy gong sounded from the courtyard, shaking through the floorboards under her pallet. Her life as a handmaiden awaited her. For the past twenty years, she had lived and served the family who took her in after her family threw her out. The monotonous, exhausting servant work had nearly broken her spirit – and her magic.
Her secret lessons with the town’s sorcerer sustained her.

In Kaiun’s workshop, she sat quietly as he had taught her, seeking the inner peace that made accessing her magic easier. She had mastered so many spells over the years, but came no closer to understanding who she used to be or why she couldn’t find answers anywhere in town. A group of adventurers were about to leave Raven’s Keep, and Kaiun encouraged Nyssa to join them. She wondered whether it was right to go on an adventure when she was still so unsure of who she was. The town bell tower tolled the evening chimes. With a sigh, she stood and pulled her armor and weapons out of a trunk. It was time to go
