CV Race: Elves

Elves are a rare and graceful race, and are highly valued as artisans throughout the world. Not only creators of beauty, the elves are also legendary for their physical beauty, as they are tall yet slight of build, and finely boned with delicate features. Their skin is as pale as the finest porcelain; their hair is usually raven-black or mahogany with little other variation. Blonde elves are far less common but not completely unknown. Red haired elves are very rare and considered cursed, so are almost universally shunned. While this may seem like simple prejudice, most elven mages are blonde, with dark haired elves usually being priests. So, it is possible that some darker power was often gifted to flame-haired elves. Elven eyes have cat-like pupils and white or pale metallic irises. Their ears come to a delicate point at the tip. In high society, an elven bride is considered quite a prize. The elves have lived with, and interbred with, the upper echelons of humanity for all recorded time.

Their fey heritage causes them to gravitate to their emotions more strongly than non-fey. Thus when they are angry they rage; when they love they are passionate; when they are sad they are despondent; and so on. When experiencing the world they drink in or absorb the experience through their senses rather than just observing or noticing things.

Elven Traits

The stat block listed in the PH is for a typical elf, for a PC use the following stat block.

All PCs are exceptional  All non-human races +2 to two stats of choice, regardless of subrace. This replaces all stat bonuses listed for each race. [NPC elves have +2 Dex and +2 Cha]
Age Elves reach adulthood in their late teens and live less than a century. (see note on Fey Time)
Alignment Elves tend toward no particular alignment. The best and worst are found among them.
Size Elves range from under 5 to over 6 feet tall and have slender builds. Your size is Medium
Speed Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision Given your fey heritage and your love of the night sky, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Fey Ancestry You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed and magic can’t put you to sleep.
Fey Passions You gain inspiration when you give in to your emotion and experience them to an extreme. This inspiration can stack with a standard PC inspiration, thus an elf can have two inspiration “points” at a time.
Trance Elves don’t need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. (The Common word for such meditation is “trance.”) While meditating, you can dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive through years of practice. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep.
Naturally Magical You know Detect Magic and one cantrip of your choice from any spell list. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast a 1st level spell from the same spell list once per day. When you reach 5th level, you can also cast a 2nd level spell from the same spell list once per day. You can choose the ability that you use as the spellcasting ability for these spells.
Language You can speak, read, and write Common and Elvish. Elvish is fluid, with subtle intonations and intricate grammar.

City Elf

As a city elf, you have a keen mind and a mastery of at least the basics of magic.

Tall, stoic and strikingly beautiful. To a human, larger than life – most stand at 7-8 feet tall towering above mere humans and look like finely sculpted Greek statues. They appear ageless, wise and stoic. They move with such grace that defies physical possibility. Every gesture, every movement is as a finely choreographed dance, full of grace and elegance. Despite their stature, they posses about as much physical strength as a human. They tend to be slender, and rather fragile.

When they talk, they do it the way we sing. Their conversations are beautiful to human ears. In fact their voice has a hypnotic quality to humans – it touches some deep ancestral nerve in all men. There are countless tales of woodsmen being led astray, hypnotized and dominated by an elf. Their eyes are like deep caverns – mirrors to another universe. All black, with occasional gleams of strange color.

Most humanoids can’t look directly into their eyes without loosing their wits and becoming susceptible to suggestion. Not only that, these elves consider men to be simpler, less sophisticated cousins. They can look straight through them. Any attempts of subterfuge by a man, are almost completely transparent to a City Elf. They know you are lying from your body language, perspiration, temperature changes – they are attuned to such things, because these minuscule details are part of their very complex native language.

City Elf Weapon Training Proficient w/rapier and hand crossbow
Cantrip You know two cantrips of your choice from the wizard spell list. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for it.
The Body Is Our Voice Advantage on social checks related to insight
Aloof & Otherworldly You have disadvantage on social checks with non-fey creatures.
Eyes of Fascination When a creature starts its turn within 10′ of a city elf and can see the elf’s eyes it must make a DC 12 saving throw or be susceptible to a suggestion. The elf can only use this power once per day on any particular creature.

Wild Elf

As a wild elf, you have keen senses and intuition, and your fleet feet carry you quickly and stealthily wherever you go.

Wild elves are predators. These elves do not grow or gather – they hunt and kill. They have rows of needle sharp teeth of an adapted carnivore and small claws where we have finger nails that help them both capture pray and climb trees. Instead of hair they have thin spines that vary in length and coloration. Their eyes are deep red, and glow in the dark. When they move, they do it with a grace of a born predator. They move slowly, with a premeditated intent and deadly focus, and then pounce with blinding speed. When they leap between trees they are almost a blur to the human eye. Their mannerism is alien and unsettling.

Granted, they are not bestial. They are as smart as other demi-humans are. They use tools, make clothes and have a culture of their own. But they are predators first and foremost. They are extremely territorial and they dominate and subdue everything in their realm. They react very violently when challenged on their own turf, always needing to re-assert their dominant, apex predator status.

They consider other humanoids a prey species, and treat them as such. Their society is similar to that of pack predators – like wolves they work in close knit tribes that live and hunt together, led by an alpha female. They have a matriarchical society with the women being dominant, and physically stronger and larger than men.

Wild Elf Weapon Training Proficient w/ longsword, shortsword, longbow, and shortbow
Fleet of Foot Base speed 40 feet
Mask of the Wild You can attempt to hide even when you are only lightly obscured by foliage, heavy rain, falling snow, mist, and other natural phenomena.
Reclusive & Feral You have disadvantage on social checks with non-fey creatures.
Improved Keen Senses You have advantage on perception checks related on one sense of your choice.
Natural Weapons You have natural weapons that you can use (teeth and claws) that you are proficient with that do 1d4 slashing damage

Deep Elf

At home in their subterranean mountain homes, deep elves are commonly found working hand-in-hand with mountain dwarf guilds either as rivals or as guild brothers. Deep elves are usually black skinned or albino. White is the most common hair color among deep elves, but almost any pale shade is possible.

While physically deep elves would not be mistaken for anything but an elf–beautiful, graceful, elegant–culturally they are more like their mountain dwarf companions. They are decent, roudy, gruff, greedy smiths and masons.

Superior Darkvision Darkvision range is 120 feet
Sunlight Sensitivity You have disadvantage on attack rolls and Wisdom (perception) checks that rely on sight when you, the target of your attack, or whatever you are trying to perceive is in direct sunlight.
Deep Elf Magic You know the dancing lights cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the faerie fire spell once per day. When you reach 5th level, you can also cast the darkness spell once per day. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
Deep Elf Weapon Training Proficient w/ rapiers, shortswords, and hand crossbows
Magic Resistance Advantage on saving throws versus spells and spell-like abilities
Alignment As common to all elves, deep elves are merely subterranean elves

Dark Elves

Dark elves are elves who have turned from the light of goodness and darkened their souls. They are not physically dark, but rather spiritually dark. The tend to be cruel and sadistic with a distain for all other races including their elven kin.

Deep elves being physically dark are sometimes confused with them, but are not directly related to them. An incident in a previous age where a Deep elf enclave composed of actual Dark Elves made war on the surface lands did nothing to help dispel the myth that Dark Elves and Deep Elves are synonymous.

Fey Elves

Fey elves are a magical people of otherworldly grace, living occasionally in the world but not entirely part of it; their true home in the feywild. They live in places of ethereal beauty, in the midst of ancient forests or in silvery spires glittering with faerie light, where soft music drifts through the air and gentle fragrances waft on the breeze. Fey elves love nature and magic, art and artistry, music and poetry, and the good things of the world. Physically they appear very similar to city or wild elves. Fey elves, however, can live well over 700 years (some may be immortal), giving them a broad perspective on events that might trouble the shorter-lived races more deeply. They are more often amused than excited, and more likely to be curious than greedy. They tend to remain aloof and unfazed by petty happenstance. Fey elves love freedom, variety, and self-expression, so they lean strongly toward the gentler aspects o f chaos. They value and protect others’ freedom as well as their own, and they are more often good than not.
