Prophecy: Greyhawk Gods

Greyhawk’s Gods

In creating D&D 3E, the designers of WotC placed game
balance as one of the highest priorities (and rightfully so). To do
this, they made all classes and all potential selections within a
class similar in power and scope. This was a good thing. They also
wanted to make the game easier to learn at the basic level by
reducing some of the complexities that had grown with the game. One
particular instance of this is the radical reduction of the gods
used in the base game. In this instance, a rich and varied group of
Greyhawk and Demi-human gods was cut to twelve, and forced into
specific alignment slots to give new players set options of gods of
different alignments. This was done with some reference to the
Greyhawk setting, but game balance and slot filling took precedence
over 20+ years of setting development. This was a bad thing, if
understandable. With a little work, the settings gods could’ve
easily met the requirements for WotC’s desire to meet new gamer’s
need for variety encapsulated, and left the deities of Oerth
largely unaltered in alignment and focus. I always think the ideal
is to find a way to make mechanics and setting work together
without mangling either. Of the gods that have replicant areas of
concern and cleric domains, most belong to different human
pantheons, or different races.

The purpose of this document is to restore Greyhawk’s gods to
their proper place. The following suggestions give Greyhawk its
gods, in 3E terms. This text uses Roger Moore’s Greyhawks Players
Guide as its basis for deity assignment. Note that the rules for
domain selection remain the same as normal 3E rules. Clerics choose
two domains out of the potentials offered. Sources for this list
include Monstrous Mythology, Legends and Lore, Slavers, Iuz the
Undying, The Crystal Cave (UK1), Dragon #71, Dragon #86, Dragon #
167, A Guide to the World of Greyhawk Fantasy Setting, Tome of
Magic and others.

PC GODS

Player character gods are those that are usually worshipped by
player character races: human, demihuman, and half-orc. While the
gods are categorized as Greater, Lesser, etc. this has no effect on
player characters (clerics or others) and only indicates relative
power among the gods. Gods with a race listed under worshippers are
restricted to characters of that race (full blood or partial) or
who were raised by creatures of that race.
